You begin this appropriately small-scale, non-galaxy-threatening story as seemingly every space mercenary/merchant/smuggler/miner does: taking any odd job you can find in the hopes of upgrading your bottom-of-the-line ship to something a little less crappy. The campaign missions are stretched over an open region of space that’s probably two sizes too large, but there’s more than enough going on to make Rebel Galaxy Outlaw a stellar single-player game.
It’s a flashy, modern revival of the gameplay style of classics like Wing Commander: Privateer and Freelancer, and it even all but eliminates the most annoying part of dogfighting with a creative and entirely optional piloting assist. 2015’s Rebel Galaxy is an excellent RPG built around the former, and now its prequel spin-off, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, is an action game that specializes in the latter. The editors wrote: "Not quite as freewheeling as the original, Privateer 2 is still a fluid, immersive and enjoyable game experience".In spacefaring sci-fi shows and movies – eg Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica – there are two very different kinds of space combat: the slug-fests where battleships duke it out with massive broadsides, and the fast, twitchy dogfighting of fighters buzzing around them. Privateer 2 was a runner-up for Computer Game Entertainment 's 1996 "Best Action Game" prize, which ultimately went to Duke Nukem 3D. However, he concluded that "if you can accept its multiple shortcomings, you will find that Privateer 2 is actually a fairly solid game", citing the flight mechanics, graphics, plot, acting, and massive length. He also criticized it as being a Wing Commander game in name only, with no apparent connection to the rest of the series. Greg Kasavin of GameSpot was more vehement about these two issues, saying they make the game feel like a rushed product.

He also praised the graphics, frame rate, flight mechanics, support for most flight sticks and throttles, and upgradeable ships, though he noted several glitches and the lack of Windows 95 support. He commented that while it emulates the plotline of the mainline Wing Commander series, which he said had been widely criticized, it at least gives players the option of ignoring the plot.

The game features live-action video scenes, directed by Steve Hilliker, which are discovered as the plot progresses. It is a sequel to Wing Commander: Privateer. Privateer 2: The Darkening is a space flight simulation game that was released in 1996 for MS-DOS and published by Electronic Arts under the Origin Systems brand.
